Default 2004 Saab 9-3 convertible acceleration

This evening I was driving to the drugstore and accelerated after a stop and the pedal seemed to stick. I say seemed because the pedal came back but the engine continued reving. I put in neutral and it reved very fast. Somehow it stopped. I guess between hitting the brake and trying to get the pedal up (at the time I thought it was sticking) it stopped. When I got to the parking lot, I put the pedal down enough to test it and it reved up and accelerated out of control again. I was was able to get it to stop.
With the engine off, the pedal doesn't stick. Not even sticky. Any ideas? Very scary. Thanks.
