unable to turn ignition key?

I just purchased my first Saab, a 95 900 convertible. I am a little unfamiliar with it and have a problem that may be due to my ignorance. When I went to start the car, The ignition key will not turn out of the lock position and the shifter is stuck in reverse (where I left it to get the key out). Any ideas would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum im a new member aswell. I know this sounds silly but I had exactly the same problem this morning and it was the gear stick was not pushed all the way into reverse. Once I had pushed it back (you will feel it locate into gear) I could then turn the key. The need to put it into gear is a safety feature so that if the handbrake fails it will not roll off
