Default starter problem?

This is my first post concerning my Saab 9-3. Over the past year I have been having occassional starting issues with my car which has 140,000 miles on it, but has been really trouble free other than maintainence. The garage that does work on my car said my starter was showing wear and that is why sometimes it starts and sometimes it just grinds. All the lights on the dash work, but it will just grind perhaps it will take 10" of playing with it and then it will start. Help?? Is the garage correct?

Yes, but...
When mine went at around 150K on the '96 900S, it was a solenoid problem, which is part of what is usually though of as being the starter, its actually an ***embly.
In your case, with this grinding, its a starter drive gear or, Heavens forbid, a bad starter ring gear.....this you do not want .....unless you are made of money... .
The drive gear was a separate part, as is of course the ring gear...IMO, your best deal is a rebuilt, about 1/2 to 1/10 the cost of a new one.
