Cool water on top of engine???

cranked the 2002 saab 9-3 yesterday and the car sounded like it was having an asthma attack ... popped the hood and there is water over the battery, main air flow hose, casette cover on top of engine and the hood liner is wet. the water is clean with no antifreeze mixed in. you can hear lots of popping when trying to crank i am sure electrical components are wet...not holes in the hood!! the undercarriage appears dry..letting it dry...anyone have this happen? a water pump leak would have a mix of anitifreeze right?
please advise...
