Default ABS light

My 1997 Saab 9000 CE turbo has ABS light on when I drive but not when I start it. The minute I put it on first or reverse the ABS light comes on. What's wrong with the ABS?

I went to auto zone and they did not have the instrument for the code. The guy told me that I need a new sensor and that my ABS is not working. He said that I have to pump my brakes when braking.

jhacen,

The most likley problem is a wheel speed sensor, since the light doesn't come on 'till you start to move, but as boostpowered states you will have to get the code read before you can be sure, and also so you can tell which of the 4 sensors could be bad. There is one for each wheel , the abs controll module receives signals from each sensor, the module self checks for problems each time the key is cycled, then when you start the car moving it checks the wheel speed sensors, if a signal from one of the four is not present the malfunction light illuminates.
Once you find out what sensor is malfunctioning it is fairley easy to replace.

But all this won't do any good until you have the codes read.
