stalling at idle.

I have a 1998 900 turbo that intermittently shudders or stalls at idle. It has gone for several days without stalling and the next day it will stall several times. It runs great otherwise and have not had any decrease in gas milage. The only other thing I've noticed is that three times when I have filled the gas tank when almost empty it runs irratically for the first couple of minutes. I think the first time or two it stalled the "check engine light" came on but hasn't come on since. My mechanic checked some connections, added some "contact spray" recommended by Saab and did a "leak test." Since I am not a mechanic, I am not sure what that means but it did not solve my problem.

I have seen other posts that suggest the carbon canister or turbo pressure release valve may be the culprit. I was going to replace the carbon canister first but cannot locate where it is. Is there anyone out there with suggestions or recommendations or at least can tell me where the carbon cannister is?

I posted this elsewhere on the forum but apparently wasn't the right place. I apologize and should figure out this website soon.

thanks
dan

RE: stalling at idle.

my 1988 saab 900 turbo (5 speed) stalled at idle when i held in the clutch on any given day. i did not understand it until i realized my brake/clutch fluid was leaking like crazy. when i held in the clutch the pressure decreased from a leak, causing it to stall out while in gear.i purchased a new clutch slave cylinder, put it in, and it solved the leak and the problem.

now i dont know if your 1998 is standard or automatic but that was my problem.

RE: stalling at idle.

the 1998 900 is a cable clutch, so that can't be the issue. Good call though, on a 9-3 that could be the case. With th stalling issue i'd get the IACV cleaned first and than replace all the vac hoses and just do an all out tuneup.
