accuracy of the MPG computer readout

Just wondering does anyone know how accurate the miles per gallon readout is? I can be driving one speed, reset the computer, and get 15 MPG, and do the same thing again later and get 40 MPG. What is everybody else getting for mileage? For a long time I never reset the computer and I got 24.3 - 24.5 MPG with both significant city traffic and highway mileage.

RE: accuracy of the MPG computer readout

The readouts for fuel economy is based on average. If you reset it while on the highway and wait a fiew minutes, It will display a realy good fuel economy becasue it's displaying what the car consumes in those fiew minutes that you are on the highway. You will also notice that if you punch the gas pedal to the floor that a fiew seconds later your MPG will get worse because you are dumping allot more gas in the engine than the mileage you are covering. If you do it in the city, you get poor gas mileage because it's telling you what the numbers are for that aticular moment. To get an acurate readout, you must leave it for an entire tank of gas. That will give you the MPG that you did on that tank of gas.
