For sale: 1985 Saab 900 Turbo, black, $2000

This is a 1985 SAAB 900 Turbo. It is a black hatchback with approximately 169,000 miles. I am the third owner. Itā€™s one of the only 1985 SAAB 900 Turbos I have ever seen in the Phoenix area, and despite its flaws, itā€™s by far the best of the lot.

My stepfatherā€™s parents purchased this car in Sweden in September of 1984 (it still has the original Swedish plate on the front and the import ā€œSā€ sticker on the back). They sold it to my stepfather in 2003, and I purchased it from him in 2004. I have driven it in Arizona since May of 2004. It has been my daily driver the entire time. During its life, all the owners have noted any service or repair performed on the car, including regular gas fill-ups. Additionally, I have detailed service records from the mechanic for the period I have owned the car.

The Good:
Runs reliably
Gets about 30 mpg highway and 22 mpg in-town
Turbo still provides plenty of acceleration
New back tires; front tires have lots of tread left, too
Tinted windows
Extensive service records
Sunroof
No rust
Alternator recently replaced
New battery
Hood was repainted in 2006
Has always passed emissions without any issues

The Bad:
A/C system has a leak; needs to be fixed and have coolant recharged
Radio antenna no longer retracts
Both rear reverse lights do not work
For the past 18 months, the odometer has stopped working when it hits 105 degrees

The Ugly:
Headliner has holes and is started to decay
Seats and interior have sun damage
Passenger door has a strip of sun-damaged paint (approximately 12ā€ long and 1ā€ wide)
Engine seal leaks (will drip one or two drops of oil upon start-up and shut-down)
Oil dipstick tube is cracked (leaks oil onto the engine during oil changes)

This is a great car for anyone needing a modest daily driver or wishing to pick up a rare SAAB and restore it. Itā€™s seen plenty of dirt roads, and with the back seats down it will hold a bicycle with both wheels still on, so it serves as an SUV better than most vehicles sold as SUVs. It has treated me well and I hate to sell it, but it is time to let someone else enjoy this unusual and distinctive car.
