Default Which fuel to use on my 1997 Saab 900 S hatchback?

When I first bought the car about seven years ago I was told by a gas station owner that I could use regular U.S. low-lead. And I've read that Saab automatically adjusts for whatever octane I use.

However, the car ran poorly, sputtered, lurched, and stalled at red lights.

I took it to a respected auto repair shop and the owner said to use Chevron Supreme with Techron. That made the car run much better and I've been using that for about six months. However, it still stalls from time to time at red lights.

The owner's brother and partner suggested I use VP racing fuel which is non-ethanol gasoline.

Last week I took it to VP and topped it off (I already had half a tank of Chevron) with 93 unleaded non-ethanol. The stuff isn't cheap at $7.50 a gallon. It still stalled at a light but 1/2 a tank isn't much of a test. But I'm not wild about $7.50 a gallon.

I don't have an owner's manual and am wondering:

1) What is the recommended grade of Ethanol (up to 10%) to use in the U.S., and

2) What is the recommended grade of non-Ethanol gas to use?

3) Based on your own experience what do you recommend?
