How to Finish Removing Ignition Switch?
 

Recently, I bought a brand new ignition switch for my 9000, and started taking things apart in advance. I've removed the airbag/steering wheel, steering wheel cowling and right-hand stalk.

It looks like my Haynes manual says I have to remove the whole steering column and ignition as an assembly, is that right? :(

Anyway, I've seen other posts online and people talk about how easy it is to remove the old switch, but I can't find any obvious alternatives to removing the whole kit-n-kaboodle. Is there is a better/easier way! Thank you!!

what year? got pics? on my 89 its just take off column cover,unplug wires, unbolt ign switch, then reverse. if thats not it my method would be to sit and stare at the replacment unit to figure out how it attatches then reverse engineer it.

Yeah, I was thinking I might just have to wait for the unit and see how it fits in. I would be the design on my '93 9000 isn't too much different than your '89. I think the problem is that I can't find an obvious way to unbolt the ignition switch, no torx screws, no allen screws, etc.

if you are just replacing the electrical portion. There are two Allen screws from the back of the electrical portion of the ignition switch that must be remove. Once they are removed simply pull out the switch and re-install the new one
although i said two allen screws there have been some 9000's with the ignition switch held in by pop rivets which you must drill out

If equipped with an air bag system, make certain to follow the recommended disarming procedure before, and rearming procedure after, repairs.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the air bag system, if equipped.
2. Remove the column to instrument panel trim plates and attaching nuts.
3. Lower the steering column and disconnect the shift indicator cable.
4. Disconnect the ignition and dimmer switch wire connectors.


The steering column must be supported at all times to prevent damage.

1. Remove the switch attaching screws and remove the dimmer switch followed by the ignition switch.
