Default New gasket but still smokes

Our 1985 900i auto started white smoking so the head was taken off and and a new gasket fitted together with a valve grind. Did the full tightening process as detailed in the gasket packet and got the car to start, all good, no smoke. This lasted perhaps ten minutes and the smoke started again. I checked timing and idle speed and then did a compression test. Three at 185 and the other 175 so then took it around the block to see if it would clear, but no. Next was a oil change and filter too, so the car then started with a clean exhaust. This lasted for quite a few minutes and then the smoke retuned. I gave up at that point and had a beer.
The other thing that has happened is that there is a noise akin to something that is running dry but is not at engine speed. This is low down at the number one end.
Any thought from the knowledge base would be appreciated

I see you have changed the head gasket and oil filter, have a look at the PCV valve ,and the rocker cover to check for sludge blocking the engine from breathing ,white smoke on start up can be just condensation ,take the car for a run and get the engine up to operating temperature on the water temp gauge , short trips and stop start running, can put a lot of moisture into your engine /exhuast system.

did you check the valve stems/seals when you did the head gasket ?

The smoking is sometimes due to the cooler water is finished in your vehicle. When we went for a trip last year, it started smoking and car stopped in midway, then we turned off the car for 1 or 2 hours and filled the cooler with water, and then tried making it work. That was a success.
