Default Smoothest route to MP3 in 01 Saab 9-3?

Greetings, I just bought a 2001 Saab 9-3 (so far I love it BTW). My only complaint is the outdated radio. I have a pioneer DEH6000 headunit from my old car that I had hoped to transfer to the Saab, but I've been hearing horror stories about replacing the factory unit in these cars. I used to work as an installer and I don't think we ever had a single one come through, though I was told they were a bear to do.

It looks like the radio comes out simple enough, but knowing euro-cars (I worked for Volvo and Benz) they tend to route crazy control units and such through things like the radio. Is this the case with Saab's as well?

Finally, what I really want is MP3 playback, through the CD or a hard-drive of some sort. Anyone know if the newer MP3 capable Saab factory units will fit the older models? How about a cd-changer input on the radio, anyone know of a unit that would integrate mp3 with the factory stereo without resorting to an fm-modulator?
