red hot turbo?

Default red hot turbo?

i just bought a 93 9000 cse when ever i give it a good run throught the gears utilizing the turbo to its fullist i stop and open the hood and the back side of the turbo is glowing red !? if anybody has any ideas to how or why this is happining or how to fix it please let me know , thank you

well, my friend, this is actually normal...under hard acceleration the EGTs on a turbocharged car go through the roof and the turbo can and does start glowing red...pretty much the only way to not have it do that is not to drive it hard...don't worry too much though, my turbo after a few hardrunsglows in the dark like a field in Chornobyl...



edit: just DO NOT shut it off immediately after a hard run, that cooks the oil trapped in that red glowing turbo...let her cool off for a minute or you'll need a turbocharger rebuild quite soon.

I have heard that letting a turbo-charged car cool down for a minute before shutting it down is very important. I also heard that this is not necessary with newer cars. Has something been developed in the last few years that makes this cooling down unnecessary?
