Advise on buying a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE

Could someone please give me some advice. I found a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE for sale online for $8000 with 71k miles on it. It is leather interior(which i think comes standard in the SE edition), has power everything, moon roof, is a 5-speed manual transmission. Does this seem like the Saab I should get? It blue books for about 8500 good condition but I think I should offer less then $8000. If it runs well and has no mechanical problems what do you think? Please advise.

Try to bring the price down a little....otherwise sounds like a solid deal.

Yup, sounds like a good deal.. You could always ask a local mechanic to check on theSaab 93 Parts to make sure there are no mechanical problems. Enjoy the car!

Just make sure you have some sort of written agreement with the seller
because they will usually try and get away with telling you "there nothing wrong"
and a few days later something broken :(

Here's what Ive replaced since buying my 2001 Saab 9-3 convertible a year ago.
Batteries in the key fobs (sounds simple but I had to order them off of the internet
because nobody sells them in the USA. Radio Shack - no, Circuit City - no, Staples - no.
Battery World - not even at Battery World.)
Headlight control Module
Headlights (these need replacing every 3 - 4 months I found)
Exhaust mounting brackets
AC Compressor ($1500)
Convertible top (stopped going up but still comes down nicely)
Trunk button (stopped working)
SID (Stopped being legible-is it 12:34 or 1 :7U)
Now the engine has started to make a horrible grindign souns, accompanied by stalling,
a rough idle and a check engine light. (I can onyl assume the car has decided to self
destruct and is turning itself into a pile of shavings.)

The key fob batterias are found at Walgreens out of all places
AC compressor is a $300 part new if you look hard enough for it.

Hey roto im going to get my Mbc this weekend but I'm not quite sure how to put it on yet
is it easy or hard
can you walk me threw it?

RE: Advise on buying a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE

Oh boy... I can walk you through it, but if you blow your engine up don't hold me responsible:)) Do you have a boost gauge? (not hte one in the cluster, but one that actually reads psi and is accurate)

i dont have a boost gauge
i can blow my engine up?
how would i do that?

RE: Advise on buying a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE

1. You need a boost gauge
2. Sure
3. By overboosting
4.This doesn't belong in this particular thread, but whatever:)

well what would be a good place to set my boost to where i would get more performance but my engine wouldn't be overwhelmed by the boost its getting?

Roto 10-15-2008 08:12 PM

RE: Advise on buying a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE

How would you know where your boost is if you don't have a gauge? I don't know what the 9000's run for stock boost, but I wouldn't take it more than 3psi over stock without a wideband lambda and some control over fuel and ignition.

where can i get a boost gauge? i am going to get one this weekend ( from where though ?)
3psi wouldn't not blow the engine would it? should i get a Mbc or not?
i'm new to tuning i'm learning as i do things by my self and the turbo is what i am teaching myself Atm
so i kind of need to ask a lot of questions

RE: Advise on buying a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE

A boost gauge is available at any auto parts store with a "tuner's" section. Ebay or any other online place would have it too. You're starting the learning process from the end of the book. Start with internal combustion engine theory first. Forced induction isn't an easy subject to start with... and it could cost you an engine if you're not careful.

Im not going to over boost i just want to push a little bit more psi
and a boost guage can read that and its pretty cool
do i see any Hp gains from a bigger intercooler?

Roto 10-16-2008 07:07 AM

RE: Advise on buying a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE

You don't see hp gains from an intercooler directly. A better intercooler is a supporting modification. It affects spool-up time and also allows you to run higher boost (higher boost = hotter air, which needs to be cooled)

OH ok
i seen several racing inter cooler's for like 40-60$ on ebay
do i need to buy the actual size that i have now
i seen a Cx racing inter cooler for 40$ on ebay

Roto 10-16-2008 06:06 PM

RE: Advise on buying a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE

ok, let's get something straight. Something for $40 on ebay is not a good idea. There's good deals and too good to be true deals. You need to know what size will fit your car... I'll look into that sometime next week, but for now don't buy anything.
