Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
I am on here to help a friend out. He drives a saab 9-3 and has NO problems with it until recently he through the serpentine belt and the car stopped, of course. He replaced the belt and now it won't start. Is there a emergency fuel cut off or something.
The car will turn over fine but won't start. Any ideas what this is? He has been driving his 3rd car now for sometimes and the saab is just sitting. Help thanks Jason |

THe belt has a bad tendency to take stuff out along with it...tell him to look arount for ripped wires/hoses

I looked for a minute but i guess we need to take another look

RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
yeah you do....I bet the thing knocked something off...does the car crank? Do you hear the fuel pump priming? It could havedamaged the CPS wire.

I hear the fuel pump, not starting at all, just turns over with the starter

RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
Ok, so the car is still down. We checked the fuel rail. We have gas to the fuel rail. We pulled out the coil pack banks one at a time, inserted the spark plugs in them, and angled the plugs ontop of the valve covers and turned over the engine. All 6 of the spark plugs spark when turning over. I poured fuel down into the cylinders and tried to start, it, still nothing.
We checked the timing belts, and both are there intact and moving with the motor. We also took a plug out and checked to make sure we didn't have catastrophic failure, the pistons are going up and down. We also chainged the oil to look for metal in the oil, nothing there. So, we have fuel, we have spark, we have timing, and no outwardly signs of failures ANYWHERE. The only other symptoms are that it seems to be turning over faster than before when it was working. The motor just seems to spin over free'er than before this trouble happened. I have tried everything I can think of. Usually if you have fire, and fuel and air, you will start an engine. OH, while troubleshooting I found it is a 99' 9-5 TURBO V6 Saab. You help is MUCH appreciated! Please responds as soon as you can. |
RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
can you run a compression test?
|
RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
Not at the moment but I will get the tool and check it. I am thinking somthing is up with the vavles or something because it is spinning over faster than it used to.

RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
are you sure you put the new belt on tight? If the tensioneer isn't up to par it will spin faster.

RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
I think we have a bent valve issue. All signs poin to that but the timing belts are both on and do not seems to have any distortion. But my thought is that he was accellerating hard when the accessory belt let go and maybe the extra momentum made the timing jump time.
What do you guys think? |
RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
Umh,I think it's the weak timing belt tensioneer personally...very comon on the V6's... just make sure that when you go to fix it you don't pay $80 for a valve...they're like 10/ea

RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
Yea, the tensioner for the fan belt is worn but that shouldn't affect the timing usually. It's just all very strange
|
RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
I meant the timing belt tensioneer.
|
RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
Oh, I will check that.... So you think it IS Valvetrain damage?
|
RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
um...you said yourself that you think it a bent valve, I'm just saying why it could be..
|
RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
No, I know, i was just asking if you think that the serpentine belt coming off could have made it jump time? Knowing that the tensioner pulleys are usually weak, do you think that it's plausable that it jumped time when the serpentine belt came off due to the increased momentum after the belt let go? I ask because you seem to have more experience with Saab's than I.
Thanks, Jason |
RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
well while that is unlikely, freak accidents do happen...no way to know without checking...

RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
I had a similar problem with a customers V8 jaguar. it turned out to be the piston rings. auto choke was staying on and washing the cylinders down. wearing the rings and eventually it just wouldn't start. It was a little smokey before this happened, and was burning oil by the truckload. I don't suppose this was the case......

RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
Seems that there was no compression and maybe the timing belt is wrong. First first if the timing belt is installed correctly. Better take that to the shop. The belt when it broke may have moved the sensor out of position or damaged the wiring to it. Try checking the battery connections too. They only need to be a tiny bit loose to cause problems. Also try checking the water in the battery if it gets low it can ruin your battery.

RE: Friends 9-3 through a belt and now won't start
We took the heads off and found that ALL the Intake Valves were bent. We are having them rebuilt for $730,now we have to find a place toget a tension pulley and a water pump while were there. Anyone know where to get a good price on parts?
