I just bought a 99 9-3 saab and am new to saabs, and i have yet to figure out how to turn the headlight wipers on, how do i do it?
and i know the S on the shifter is for sport, but what benefits do i get if i use it?
also, what do the 2 headlight buttons on the left do?

 

The two buttons are for front foglights and the rear headlights. The one that lights up on the dash is the rear fog light. The headlight wipers are usually broken, but they turn on with the regular wipers.

 

The "S" is for sport mode. It tells the engine management computer to change the shift points on the tranny and (at least on the 2000-2002 T7 cars as they have throttle-by-wire) it changes the throttle response. It makes the car much more fun to drive. Also, the "W" on the console next to the shifter is for Winter mode. It starts the car moving from 3rd gear rather than 1st of reduce the amount of torque applied to the wheels so they don't slip as easy on snow and ice.

 

i just went through the same headlight head-scratching as you seem to be going through... for the headlight washers to work, the headlights have to be on (so, either night darkness or set to on, only works in AUTO position at night), and then the headlights will only wash on every 5th spray, or if its been 2 or more minutes since you last sprayed, and you have to be going less than 125mph....

seems like a lot more programming to come up with all of that than just putting an option in the SID, or having a manual switch just for headlight spray.

 

going 125mph is fun... who needs headlights washed when the wind picks up all the dirt lol
