Default Oil sludge problem - what is it?

Okay, what is this oil sludge problem I've been seeing within some of the posts? I have a 2002 and a 2006 9-3 convertible. I bought the '02 about a month or so ago with 101,000 miles on it. I haven't had any problems with it (knock on wood) and have already had the oil changed. Would the guys that changed my oil have seen a problem when they changed it? How can I prevent it? Is my '06 susceptible to the problem? I will be crushed if my car(s) fall victim to this.

THe guys doing the oil change would not have seen it. The best insurance against it on the 02 is to pull the oil pan and clean it. It will make sure you don't suffer engine failure from sludge. The 06 I am not sure if it's even susceptible to that problem.

Thanks for the info Roto. I will see if I can figure out how to look at the oil pan myself. If not, I will take it over to my local mechanic and have him help me with it.

You would need to lower the front of the subframe to take it off. It's not horrible difficult. If you do take it to a mechanic - don't let him charge anything over $200 for the job.
