My car recently came back from the shop after getting the shifter cable replaced. This is an automatic transmission and most of the things seem to be computer controlled, so I don't think this is the issue.

Anyway, when I try to manually select the gear, my only options are 2nd gear and 5th gear. When leave in on drive, its performance is consistent with it being stuck in 5th gear. I can drive it in the city if when I stop I shift down to 2nd gear, use that to 25 mph, shift into neutral, drift a bit, then shift into 5th. Highway driving is no problem and that's just staying in 5th.

This car is a 14 year old beater with 200k miles on it and I don't have the time, skills, or money to take care of the car properly. But would leaving this problem be lead to long term damage to the transmission?
