RE: check gear box light
The neutral safety switch is located on top of the transmission, underneath the battery on a 1995 saab. It may be the same on yours.
Over time, the lubrication used builds a "ramp" and the contact points do not connect, so the check gearbox light comes on, and the car goes into fail safe mode.
Either replace the switch, or, if you are adventuresome, remove the switch (about 1 hour in your driveway) take the switch apart, straighten out the lubrication, and reinstall.
I did mine 2 years ago, and haven't had a problem re-occur.
Good luck.
