Question TPS Code

I have a 1999 9-5 SE that i just bought. When getting it inspected it was rejected because the check engine light was on. The code came back as "TPS" Throttle positioning sensor. The car is at the mechanic now, but I would love to know if this is a big problem, or if maybe i can fix it myself. Anyone ever heard of this problem before? any suggestions??

THANX!!!

Typically, throttle position sensor codes are self explanitory, which means, it probably has a bad throttle position sensor. On cars with electronic throttles, the sensor is not serviceable, and you may be looking at having the whole throttle body replaced. There are companies that sell reman throttle bodies for less, but I have heard mixed results from them (short life spans). I would get a new one, and there are many vendors that sell new OEM parts below dealer price.

Did you try shopping around for a cheaper throttle body? You can get new ones from places other than the dealer. Just wondering....

Default no time to shop around...

I didn't have the option. The $675 covered parts and labor. I didn't have the time to wait due to the fact the car has rejected inspection sticker because of this problem. In Mass, if your check engine light is on, you don't pass inspection. I just got the car last week and am just trying to get it on the road. I haven't actually seen the invoice yet so I'm not sure how the parts/labor will be broken out. Do you know what a reasonable price would be for these parts?
