Default sudden loose clutch pedal

Hello - I've got a 94 saab 900 (non-turbo). The clutch pedal was working, then suddenly had 4" of play at the top. The clutch engages very close to the floor. Any thoughts as to what might have happened/where I should start for diagnosing/fixing? The clutch still works in all gears...

Default unclear fix

It looks like others on this forum have had similar issues, though there have been no useful responses/fixes.

I took the liberty of looking under the hood (and dashboard) at the clutch cable. The cable was loose at both ends (pedal and transmission sides). I was able, by hand, to remove the transmission side of the cable easily. I twisted the ends in hopes that there was an adjustment mechanism in the end that allowed me to manually "shorten" the cable by taking up some of it in the end cap (a long shot). This did not work, however, when I went to replace the cable end, the cable was shorter than it'd started and i had to pry the lever that it fits into towards the firewall (clutch disengaged or too the floor position) to be able to slide the cable end (transmission end) back into place. For now, the clutch is engaging in the middle of the clutch travel and is no longer 'floppy'.

It's not clear to me what I changed/how the cable works, but I'm sure there's someone out there in Saab-land that can enlighten the rest of us...
