Thumbs up Cure for intermittent starting fault?

Interrmittent starting fault on 2.3t 9-5 auto estate. AA suggested; replace relays for fuel pump and/or fuel injection, situated under the driver's side dash, (just above your shins!) No joy! AA again, replace 'ignition discharge module', easy, a good second hand one £50, (£300+ new) No joy. Read a bit about the 'crankshaft position sensor',(CPS) suspected that could be the problem, bought one, (80 bloody quid for a magnet on a 15" piece of wire!) Removed old one, found big dollop of swarf on the end. Pretty awkward job, so didn't want to risk cleaning and replacing it, although I think that may well have done the job. Fitted new one ............... PERFECT ever since! Conclusion? Go straight for the CPS, clean it, refit it and it'll cost you nothing, maybe £25 if you can find a DIY friend to do it!
