Default ECU programming

My 2006 9-3 has an ECU with an internal fault. I got a replacement off of ebay.

I am aware the new ECU will need to be programmed at the dealership. The car is presently located at my home. In present condition, my car can make it to the dealership within the 15 minutes I get before it kicks into limp-home mode.

If I install the new ECU, will it run at all before programming? Could I drive to the local dealership in limp home mode? Or will it not start at all?
The new ECU is the correct part, but it's used and came off a different model of car.
